Match Report – Wisbech St Mary vs. Foxton– League – 18.01.2025

January 19, 2025

Foxton were on the road on Saturday and were on the wrong end of a 3-2 scoreline against hosts W.S.M.

Both teams started fairly brightly, Alfie had early chance well blocked by a home defender.

The home side then had a few good openings in quick succession, Finn cleared one off the goal line, and a well struck free kick cannoned back off the cross bar.

After this little storm, Foxton then countered with Ed Watson surging forward inside the box and being fouled to earn a penalty. Liam stepped up but the home keeper was up to the task and saved well.

The home team attacked again, and Louis made good save, diving to his left side.

The game was far too open, which was probably good for the neutral but not ideal for either management team.

Foxton then attacked again, with Ed and Jez linking well, Jez then squared to Sam, but his powerful effort was narrowly off target.

In the 38th minute Foxton took the lead when Sam won possession, beat his man and played a good ball to Liam, who’s early snapshot beat the home keeper at the near post.

HT 0-1

The home side started the second half on the front foot and forced Louis to make another save immediately.

They attacked again soon after and a cross from the right was headed home by the Wisbech left winger.

Foxton again weathered a little storm and then started to get a bit of a foot hold in the game, which resulted in a strong 15/20-minute spell, where it looked like we would score every time we attacked, but it unfortunately, didn’t happen. A couple of week efforts off target, a couple of good last-minute blocks and one too many touches from our boys when in good positions, meant we didn’t capitalise from our best spell of the game.

Fair play to the home team, who didn’t give up and defended well.

In the 86th minute they got an equaliser, when a free kick from right side was headed home from close range.

Both teams still thought they could win it, and it was the home side who got the winning goal in the 89th minute, when Foxton left themselves wide open for a counterattack and then got punished for it. A ball out to the left, found an attacking player, who drove forward and slotted past Louis to give his team the points.

A close entertaining game, which maybe could’ve gone either way, unfortunately, for Foxton, it went in favour of the home side.

TEAM:  Williams, Gillies, Beard, Hoskins, McCormick, Hicks, McMurrough, Watson, O’Dell, Moir, Houssini.
