Match Report – Foxton vs Ely City Reserves -League – 21.10.2023

October 22, 2023

Foxton picked up a point at home to Ely City Res in an entertaining game.

Foxton started well and took the initiative from the start, putting the visitors on the back foot.

A strong move down the left side, resulting in Jack flashing a ball across the box in the path of Jake, went narrowly wide. Another chance came, shortly after good link up play between Kaane, Mez and Ryan, unfortunately, Ryan’s shot went wide of the post.

Ely were also a threat on the counter, with their big lad up top proving to be handful, with some good hold up play and also winning his team some free kicks with his strength, one of these kicks led to an Ely corner, which was only half cleared, luckily Mez managed to charge down and block the shot from the Ely player, which looked on target.

Most of the Ely set plays were well dealt with by the Foxton back line.

Foxton were still looking dangerous when attacking and had another corner, after a shot had deflected wide.

Jack’s corner was met by Jake but unfortunately, he could only head over the bar from close range.

The deadlock was finally broken on about 35 minutes, with Kaane, Mez and Ryan, linking up again. This time Ryan opened his account for the club, with a curling effort that gave the keeper no chance.

Ely’s heads didn’t drop and in the last 10 minutes of the half they came on strong and put Foxton under pressure.

Ely started the second half well and levelled on about 50 mins, after an uncharacteristic mistake from George, gifted their player a chance which he duly took.

With their tails up, Ely pushed for a second goal and five minutes later, they should’ve taken the lead when they had a glorious chance from close range, but the forward hammered his shot over the cross bar.

After weathering the storm Foxton managed to get back into the game as the play settled down and became even.

We took the lead on 72 mins, from the spot and via Jake, after an Ely player had handled the ball in the box.

Gwynnie nearly snatched a third Foxton goal from a corner, but his header was saved by the keeper.

Ely then had a strong attack which resulted in a snapshot that went close to equalising.

On 89 minutes they did draw level, when they were awarded a penalty, after Gwynnie fouled an Ely player after a bit of ping pong in the box. Pinney got his hands to the ball but couldn’t keep it out.

Now into injury time, Foxton had a chance to get all the points when Jake chased down an Ely defender and nicked the ball, but his lobbed effort fell agonisingly wide of the post.

Overall, a decent game and probably a fair outcome.
