Fulbourn 1-3 Foxton

Foxton were back in action this week, away to Fulbourn.

Fulbourn have been struggling this season so far with only one point in the league, so Foxton were looking to capitalise on the opportunity for points. They made a pretty good start and could’ve taken the lead inside the first couple of minutes, but Gregg’s header from Liam’s corner went just wide.

Foxton then had a scare at the other end when a clever, early Fulbourn free kick, found their striker through with Louis to beat but he saved well at the feet of the striker.

Foxton then took the lead, when this time, Gregg’s header from a Liam cross beat the keeper and nestled nicely in the net. Justin nearly doubled the lead straight away after a good one two with Gregg, but the home keeper saved well.

Gregg was again in the action on 15 minutes, after a good move down the left. Justin teed him up at the far stick but his shot crashed against the cross bar.

Fulbourn then broke straight up the other end and equalised, when a cut back from the left found an onrushing player who slotted past Louis.

Foxton went back on the attack and a low rasping shot from Luca was again well saved by the home keeper. Fulbourn had a couple more shots themselves, which Louis saved however.

The last telling moment of the half saw Graver head over the bar from a Jacko corner.

HT 1-1

The second got underway and it was Fulbourn who had the first opening, but again, Louis saved well.

Following this, the game became a bit scrappy as both side looking to gain control, and with neither side causing many problems for their opposing defenders.

On 70 minutes, Foxton took the lead when Ada’s corner found Eliot Keating. His shot took a slight deflection and crept in at the near post.

The goal took the wind out of the Fulbourn sails, and the score soon became 3-1, when Justin scored well from 20 yards, after he had picked up Jacko’s cross field ball.

Foxton were then able to see the game out, and nearly claimed a fourth just at the end, after a good move down the right and squared ball, which found Ada, but his first time shot could only hit the cross bar and fall safe.

Foxton Res 1 – 5 Steeple Morden Res

First Half

Foxton played host to lower-league, Steeple Morden Reserves in the First round of the Lower Junior Challenge Cup.

The Foxes started brightly with the majority of the possession in the opening 10 minutes bringing a few half-chances early on.

The visitors then broke the deadlock with a poachers’ finish after the home defence failed to clear a low cross.

Their lead was soon doubled after veteran, Peel, brought down the striker with a trailing leg and the resulting penalty was coolly placed into the bottom corner of Harper’s goal.

Steeple smelt blood and a depleted Foxton side were struggling to impose any kind of dominance expected from a team two divisions higher than their opponents; the final 10 minutes of the half saw goals 3 and 4 for the minnows.

Foxton were desperate for a break from the onslaught and the referee obliged – halftime was indicated and the home side trailed by four.

Second Half

The home side seemed to take on board the comments from manager AR and started the second half much better than they finished the first.

The midfield pairing of Lawrence and Jonas seemed to grasp a much better idea of the pace of the game and started to initiate attacks with Lawrence the ball-winner and Jonas taking care of distribution.

Foxton’s one bright spark in the match, J. Rushton, was continually delivering crosses and facing up the Steeple left-back and this soon proved fruitful as a ball into the feet of Lawrence brought a twist and a turn before drawing a foul just inside the box – penalty awarded; with usual penalty taker, Lightfoot, currently being a bus Banker, it was left to Gypps to slot home from 12 yards.

The visitors cemented their victory less that 5 minutes later with a cool finish into the Foxton net. Foxton are out of the Lower Junior Challenge Cup.

Good luck to Steeple Morden Reserves in the coming rounds.
